FIRST LIGHT NATURE PRESCHOOL

The Wonder of Creation

Our curriculum follows the seven days of creation with a month dedicated to each day of creation.  Christmas and Easter utilize the remaining two months during the school year that we do not discuss a specific day of creation.  Using the days of creation as our framework results in a very science based curriculum.  In September we start with Day 1 and study light and forms.
"In the beginning God created the sky and the earth.  The earth was empty and had no form.  Darkness covered the ocean and God's Spirit was moving over the water. Then God said 'Let there be light!' And there was light.  God saw that the light was good.  So he divided the light from the darkness.  God named the light 'day' and the darkness 'night.'  Evening passed, and morning came.  This  was the first day." Genesis 1:1-5
This verse opens up the following topics for the first month.
  • Light/Dark
  • Earth/Sky
  • Shapes
  • Rainbows and the Spectrum
  • Five Senses
The sky, oceans and earth are all discussed in more detail on other days of creation.  Literacy, math, art, music, motor skills and many other skills are also practiced using days of creation as our guide.  Click below to see my general curriculum plan.
Curriculum Plan

Play Based Philosophy

During class, the children will have a variety of activities to choose from.  Some of the activities can be taken from a shelf and worked on, while others may be loose parts or our mud kitchen.  I observe the children to see what excites them and draws their attention .  I do use my curriculum as a guide, but will adjust the available activities if something specific peaks their interest.  For example if they are playing and lift up a board and find an interesting creature, we may learn a little about that creature during our next class.  If they are really intrigued it may continue, if not we will continue with the planned curriculum.

The activities available to them during our class times all have purpose, whether to aid in developing their math and literacy skills, their creativity and imagination, fine and gross motor skills, focus and concentration, independence, sensory development or to promote healthy social interactions, just to name a few.

Most days they will have a selection of craft supplies to do with what they would like.  I am not concerned with them creating a product as much as I am about them learning during the process.  So some of the crafts that they create may not look as you would expect.  Sometimes the craft may end up getting cut up altogether.  While creating and sometimes destroying something, much can be learned.
